It’s primary night in Congressional District 2

In this largely Democratic district that includes Boulder and mountainous points west, Joan Fitz-Gerald, Jared Polis and Will Shafroth duked out a close primary election night to replace Rep. Mark Udall, who is running for the U.S. Senate. Tonight’s winner, Jared Polis, will likely go to Washington in November. Read The Colorado Independent Wednesday for more updates.

10:45 p.m. – According to Colorado Independent’s Bob Spencer, Polis has thanked his supporters and his campaign staff for working against “every special interest” out there. Polis, who is the first openly gay person to be elected to Congress, also spoke about what his win tonight means to him.

10:38 p.m. – Fitz-Gerald has conceded the race to Jared Polis.

10:28 p.m. – The Boulder County Clerk is reporting Polis’ lead over Fitz-Gerald has remained steady at 3 percentage points with 73 percent of precincts reporting.  Polis overwhelmingly won in Broomfield with 51% of the vote as well as in Adams County.

9:37 p.m. – The Broomfield County Clerk is reporting full voting results for CD2 on its Web site. Adding to his win in neighboring Adams County, Polis overwhelmingly won in Broomfield with 51% of the vote.

Broomfield final results:

Joan Fitz-Gerald:  13,920 – 35.18%

Jared Polis:          14,676 – 50.99%

Will Shafroth:         5,991 – 13.83%

Total Votes:          3,434  –  100%

9:15 p.m. – The Rocky Mountain News is reporting updated numbers in CD 2 on its home page with Polis’ lead inching higher.

From the News:

Joan Fitz-Gerald:     13,920 – 39.1%

Jared Polis:             14,676 – 43.2%

Will Shafroth:            5,991 – 17.6%

8:51 p.m. – The Adams County Clerk’s Office just released its full primary election results for CD 2 and Jared Polis wins the county with 47 percent of the vote.

Joan Fitz-Gerald:    3,705 – 38 percent

Jared Polis:            4,617 – 47 percent

Will Shafroth:         1,422 – 15 percent

Total votes:             9,744

8:40 p.m. – The Boulder Daily Camera is reporting no change in Polis’ 2 percentage point lead over Fitz-Gerald after 22,000 votes have been counted. The Camera is reporting preliminary vote totals from seven of 10 counties in the 2nd Congressional District. From the Camera:

“Out of more than 22,000 votes counted in seven of the district’s 10 counties, Polis has garnered 41.5 percent of the vote while Fitz-Gerald has received 39.5 percent. Will Shafroth, a career conservationist from Boulder, trails in the race with 19 percent of the vote.”

The article continues:

“Polis holds an early lead in Boulder, Broomfield, Weld and Eagle counties, while Fitz-Gerald is on top in Jefferson, Clear Creek and Summit counties.”

8:23 p.m. – The Boulder County Clerk’s Web site has updated preliminary results. Polis’ lead on Fitz-Gerald remains unchanged after the addition of about 1,000 counted ballots. Still nothing from Adams County.

Joan Fitz-Gerald:          5,897 –  38%

Jared Polis:   6,296 –  40%

Will Shafroth: 3,372 –  21%

Total Votes:                 15,654

8:15 p.m. – The Boulder Daily Camera is reporting former Senate President Joan Fitz-Gerald picked up two percentage points to close the gap on Jared Polis’ preliminary lead with 21,000 votes counted. Partial results from five counties reported on the Camera’s Web site are:

Fitz-Gerald:   40 percent

Polis: 42 percent

Shafroth: 18 percent

7:56 p.m. – TIME Magazine wrote an article today on Jared Polis and the possibility of that he could be the first openly gay congressional member ever elected to office. Polis has taken an early and preliminary lead in the 2nd Congressional District primary tonight.

7:46 p.m. – The Boulder County Clerk’s Web site is now saying the next update will come at 8 p.m. Still no updates from original numbers posted at 7 p.m.

7:38 p.m. – ColoradoPols is reporting updated numbers in the Democratic primary in the 2nd congressional district.

Fitz-Gerald:       6,646 –  38.4%

Polis:                7,337 –  42.4%

Shafroth:           3,303 –  19.1%

7:05 p.m. – Preliminary results coming from Boulder County Clerk with the next update at 7:45 p.m. Still nothing from Adams County.

Joan Fitz-Gerald:          5,555 –  38%

Jared Polis:   5,897 –  40%

Will Shafroth: 2,990 –  20%
