Seven months ago they were picking rubble off their porches, left by a wicked mile-wide tornado. This week members of the Windsor High School marching band learned they are one of 56 bands who were picked to perform in President-elect Barack Obama’s Inauguration Day parade.
“This is like the greatest thing to ever happen,” trumpeter Samantha Medina told The Denver Post. “Yesterday, when I heard, I was like jumping around.”
In October the Windsor Wizards won the 2008 Colorado Bandmasters Class 3A State Championship. The town of about 18,000 northeast of Denver was struck in May by a massive tornado. One person died in the tornado. In all an estimated 250 homes were damaged, with many a total loss.
The band learned it has been selected to play during inauguration festivities with a Monday morning phone call from Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter.
