Labor Dept. bad news: Colorado still bleeding jobs

The latest U.S. Labor Department figures provide no cheer for Coloradans. The news from Washington is that the state lost another 8,600 jobs in August, bringing the total number of jobs lost in Colorado over the last 12 months to 28,100. Those numbers go a long way in explaining projections reported this week that put the state budget another $200 million short for 2011.

A quick assessment from Washington Independent economy reporter Annie Lowery:

For the fourth month in a row, Nevada remained the state with the worst unemployment rate — 14.4 percent, the highest level since the government started keeping state unemployment records. North Carolina created the most jobs, 18,600, and Michigan lost the most, 50,300. Over the course of the past year, Alabama, Tennessee, and North Carolina have seen the best improvements in their unemployment rates, which dropped between 1.2 and 1.4 percentage points.

In short: more evidence of a slow recovery.
