We know medical marijuana will never bring enough revenue to balance the state’s budget, but according to an article in today’s New York Times, medical smoke is balancing the budgets of newspapers all over Colorado.
With alternative weeklies regularly publishing special sections stuffed with marijuana ads and even smokers’ product reviews, marijuana is helping newspapers fight off Craigslist and a shrinking market for real estate ads. The Times notes, though, that it isn’t just weeklies taking advantage, but also publications like the Denver Post.
American Constitution Party Gubernatorial candidate Tom Tancredo a couple of weeks ago advocated legalizing the drug altogether, eliciting howls of protest from rival candidates Republican Dan Maes and Democrat John Hickenlooper. A few days later, The Colorado Independent published the results of a study showing that the decriminalization of all drugs in Portugal had led to reduction in use.
The Times article notes that medical marijuana is creating work not just for newspapers but for attorneys and even realtors, who smell a budding new market both for storefronts and for close-in agricultural properties.
