[dropcap]R[/dropcap]oughly 40 shops in Colorado licensed to sell marijuana for recreational use for the first time ever in the United States sold a lot of pot to a lot of happy adults on New Year’s Day. Customers waited in lines in towns all across the state. Snow fell on them in Aspen and Breckenridge and briefly on the Front Range in Denver.
Coloradans voted in 2012 to make pot legal to adults over 21 years of age. State and municipal lawmakers have taken the last year to establish rules to govern the industry. The state allowed medical marijuana dispensaries to transition to recreational pot shops this year. Next year the state will issue additional licenses.
People traveled to Colorado from across the country to buy legal pot under the state’s new pathbreaking laws.
