Tuesday is National Voter Registration Day — a reason as good as any to stoke the rivalry that burns between Colorado’s two biggest universities. Representatives of student government at the University of Colorado – Boulder and Colorado State University in Fort Collins have organized a showdown featuring… clipboards. Student groups and nonprofits will see which campus canb register more students to vote in the midterm elections this November, reports the Daily Camera. There will be free pizza.
Young voters usually turn out in smaller percentages in non-presidential elections, but Democrats have been working hard in recent elections to close the gap. Never before in U.S. history has one party so dominated the youth vote as the Democratic Party does today. Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney would have sailed into the White House in 2012, Politico reported, had he managed to just evenly split the vote among Americans under 30. Young voters made up 20 percent of the entire electorate that year. President Obama won nearly 70 percent of the youth vote to cement victories in key swing states like Florida, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio.
