Painters, musician, poets showcase art about immigration

“I know a lot of people who don’t know why people are immigrating to the United States and a lot of people who don’t know what the rules are,” said painter Karen Vazquez, one of the artists and jurors in tonight’s exhibit Home: Immigration and the Artist. “The show is going to give them a sense of what’s going on in the country about immigration.”

Vazquez has three paintings in the show. One takes on the experience of walking the line between two cultural identities. “I’ve always been on the border: Should I act more American or act more Mexican?” she said.

“Another piece represents the depression, trauma, shame and guilt that a child immigrant goes through as they grow up in America,” she added.

Her final piece is a painting of a train with a quote written on it: “I’m tired of waiting for your revolution to start, so I’m going to start my own.”

The show will feature music, poetry and the works by other visual artists. It takes place tonight, at 7 p.m., at the 11th Avenue Gallery, 835 W. 11th Avenue, Denver.
