6/7/18 Who’s Paying to Influence Your Vote?

As Colorado’s election season heats up, our mailboxes are filling up. From now through November, Coloradans will become increasingly inundated with campaign literature in the mail, on our computer screens, and via TV and the radio.

Those messages vary from glowing to vicious – even about the same candidate. And it isn’t always clear where the message is coming from – or how they paid for the message.

That’s where #COPolitics‘ “Follow the Message” comes in. The project collects political messages received by voters, creating a database of those messages, and analyzing to see where they are coming from.

Join Colorado Common Cause as we hear from Sandra Fish, a long-time reporter, editor and data journalist about her Follow the Message project. She’ll give an overview of how much money has been spent in the 2018 Primary election, where these dollars are coming from, and how we can help track the messages in the coming months.

The Colorado Independent is a statewide online news source operating in a time when spin is plentiful, but factual, fair and unflinching news in the public interest is all too rare. Our award-winning team of veteran investigative and explanatory reporters and news columnists aims to amplify the voices of Coloradans whose stories are unheard, shine light on the relationships between people, power and policy, and hold public officials to account. We strive to report the news with context, social conscience, and soul, and to give Coloradans the insight they need to promote conversation, understanding and progress in this square, swing state we call home.
