USDA interactive map could be boon to rural economic development efforts in Colorado

Senate Bill 126, Colorado Asset, passed the Senate Education Committee today on the wings of hope for immigrant students and an infusion of cash into the state economy. The bill passed 5-2.

Senate President Shaffer says Hickenlooper budget won’t stand

Senate President Brandon Shaffer, D-Longmont, and Sen. Bob Bacon, D-Fort Collins, Wednesday said that the Senate had no intention of "rubber stamping" Gov. John Hickenlooper's budget plan. They said they would work to ensure the cuts to K-12 were limited, though Shaffer failed to provide specifics on how that would be done or if he would vote for a bill that didn't include substantial cuts.

Hickenlooper plan to slash school funding draws fast response from education group

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper rolled out a budget plan Tuesday in which he proposes trying to make up hundreds of millions of dollars in shortfalls by mostly slashing elementary school funding. His plan would cut the K-12 budget by $375 million. Wednesday morning advocacy group Great Education Colorado sent out a call for Coloradans to oppose the Hickenlooper plan. The group succinctly describes how the costs will translate around the state and at local schools.

Seattle Times calls out Amazon as tax-dodging bad corporate citizen

The Seattle Times editorial board sits literally across the street from Amazon.com headquarters. It has watched the famous online retailer grow and grow and grow. Today the newspaper editors call out their neighbor for the "slick strategy" it has adopted in dodging sales taxes "all across America." The company is "the internet's widest and deepest source of products," the editors write, "which makes it too big to be excused from its obligations." It's a sentiment sure to be shared among the Colorado lawmakers who tried and failed last year to begin collecting sales taxes on Amazon purchases made in the state.

Hickenlooper slashes K-12; Dems say it’s time to consider tax increases

Stating that Colorado needs to be more pro-business, Gov. John Hickenlooper cut deep into K-12, further sacrificed state employee earnings, and shut down some state parks and services in the budget proposal he delivered Tuesday.
