Marijuana advocates protest outside Lakewood Obama office

A handful of marijuana reform advocates gathered on a sidewalk outside an Obama campaign office in Lakewood Thursday morning to draw attention to what they characterized as the Obama Administration's aggressive use of federal law to interfere with the rights of medical marijuana businesses and patients in Colorado and elsewhere.

This morning, proponents of a statewide initiative to legalize and regulate marijuana submitted nearly 160,000 signatures in support of placing the measure on the 2012 ballot. Only 86,105 valid signatures of registered Colorado voters are needed to qualify.

Marijuana legalization effort launched in Colorado today

In a little more than a year, Colorado may become the first state to legalize marijuana. Between now and then, prepare to meet petition waving enthusiasts. Colorado nabbed $7 million in medical marijuana fees this weekend

This past weekend, more than 2000 businesses in Colorado's medical marijuana industry submitted applications for licenses to operate. The applications were due Sunday and they required applicants to include payments for state fees. Those payments amounted to more than $7 million.
