Focus on the Family pushing bills to protect anti-gay discrimination

Colorado Springs-based Focus on the Family has drafted legislation for lawmakers in states around the country that would legally protect employers and landlords who turn away gay applicants based solely on the fact that they're gay. In some cases, Focus on the Family legislation would nullify already-existing anti-discrimination laws meant to guard against discrimination on the basis of sexuality and gender.

House Republican Conti makes case for civil unions

Colorado Republican House Rep. Kathleen Conti is leaning strongly in support of civil unions. She said constituent enthusiasm and scripture won her over. “The outpouring I’ve had so far from my town halls leads me to support it,” she told the Colorado Statesman, referring to legislation introduced Monday by Sen. Pat Steadman that would grant same-sex couples who enter into a civil union the legal rights and responsibilities granted to married couples in the state.

Same-sex marriage bills gaining ground in the U.S.

Maryland is poised to legalize same-sex marriage, possibly in the next few weeks. A bill on the Senate floor, SB 116 (PDF), would revise...

Civil unions bill would generate millions for depleted Colorado coffers

In a Colorado historically strapped for cash, where Democratic Governor John Hickenlooper is proposing deep cuts to elementary school education and the Republican majority in the House is pushing for business tax breaks, a new civil unions bill could generate millions in revenue for the state through sales taxes and fees and by moving people off of public assistance, according to a report released today by the UCLA Williams Institute.

Steadman eyes House Judiciary Committee as likely high hurdle for civil...

Lawmakers, staffers, lobbyists and reporters shuffle through the narrow hallways between committee rooms in the capitol. Not enough chairs line the walls between the doors. It's an anteroom heavy with murmuring gossip and speculation. Although showy debate flares up on occasion in the two-story-high House and Senate chambers, much of the real action takes place in these tiny committee rooms. Sitting outside one of the committee rooms, Sen. Pat Steadman told the Colorado Independent he believes the fate of SB 172, the same-sex civil unions bill he introduced Monday, will be decided by the members of the House Judiciary Committee.

Steadman rolls out civil unions bill as valentine to Colorado

State Sen. Pat Steadman introduced his civil unions bill in the Colorado capitol Monday, a Valentine's Day treat for lawmakers to consider in the coming months. “Civil unions will allow committed couples to share in the responsibilities and protections in Colorado law that most families take for granted," he said in a release. "Our society is stronger when we promote personal responsibility and taking care of one another, and civil unions do just that."

In advance of Steadman bill, surveys show strong support in Colorado...

As state Senator Pat Steadman gets set to introduce his civil unions legislation in Denver next week, new public opinion poll results bolster the case for the bill. The results of a Public Policy Polling survey (pdf) conducted this past weekend match almost exactly results of a survey conducted last January by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner and American Viewpoint. More than 70 percent of Coloradans support legally recognized domestic partnerships, including those between same-sex couples.

Ferrandino and Steadman question whether civil unions will get a fair...

Rep. Mark Ferrandino, D-Denver, says that even though House Speaker Frank McNulty, R-Highlands Ranch, has promised Ferrandino’s civil unions bill will get a fair hearing in the House, that really depends on what committee the controversial bill is assigned to.

Barbara Bush endorses gay marriage

As Colorado's state legislature is set to take up the issue of legalizing civil unions, Barbara Bush, daughter of former president George W. Bush, has endorsed gay marriage in New York state. Video after the jump.

Smart Steadman strategy will lean on broad public support to pass...

Colorado Senator Pat Steadman isn't depending entirely on goodwill and a sense of fairness among his colleagues at the capitol to pass the same-sex civil unions bill he will introduce next week. He is also depending on the very smart legislative strategy he has built around public support for the idea in the state.
