Romanoff, DeGette lead liberal group’s poll on candidates to replace Salazar

Outgoing House Speaker Andrew Romanoff comes out on top, followed by fellow Denver Democrats U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette and Mayor John Hickenlooper in preliminary results from an online poll asking who should replace U.S. Sen. Ken Salazar, who plans to give up his seat to become the secretary of the interior.

Who will wear the hat? Sizing up the possible replacements for...

Tuesday morning, at least a dozen Democrats looked in the mirror and saw the next U.S. senator from Colorado. Trouble is, all but one of them were seeing things. With the announcement the state's senior senator is President-elect Barack Obama's pick to be the next secretary of interior, it falls on Gov. Bill Ritter to name Sen. Ken Salazar's replacement. Within hours of news leaking that Salazar would give up his Senate seat, the names of prominent — and not-so-prominent — Democrats emerged. Some are serious contenders, some would be top picks under different circumstances, and a few, like Academy Award hopefuls, are happy just to be nominated.

Big 3 bailout votes split by party lines, campaign contributors

It doesn't come as much surprise that the Colorado congressional delegation's votes on the $14 billion financial bailout of the U.S. auto industry split along party lines. The House Dems supported the bill while their Republican counterparts, CD 5's Doug Lamborn and CD 4's Marilyn Musgrave, rejected the plan. Retiring Rep. Tom Tancredo did not vote. Where it gets interesting is the apparent correlation between partisan vote splitting and which special interest group supports said lawmaker.

DeGette: Extend SCHIP now, leave health care reform to Obama

Ahhh, it's that time of year again when lawmakers in the post-election political majority start feeling their oats and begin pushing their pet projects. And Montana Sen. Max Baucus, chair of the powerful Senate Finance Committee, has a biggie on his mind — health care reform. Except Denver's Rep. Diana DeGette, who serves on the competing Energy and Commerce Committee, isn't wild about the plan.

DeGette bill aims to stop 11th hour anti-reproductive health rule

Yet another last-minute Bush Administration regulation — one that threatens women's reproductive health services — is meeting with heavy resistance from Congress, and Rep. Diana DeGette is leading the charge in the U.S. House to kill it.

Perlmutter scores Dem leadership post with election as regional whip

Democrat Ed Perlmutter, who easily won re-election to a second term representing Colorado's 7th Congressional District, adds his name to the growing ranks of the state's delegation in leadership positions. The House Democratic Caucus selected Perlmutter to serve as regional whip — counting votes and enforcing party discipline — for the Mountain West and Northwest, his office announced Friday.

Waxman ushers in new era for environmentalists

In Capitol Hill’s Rayburn office building, in the private chambers of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, hangs an enormous satellite photograph of the planet earth. Beneath the picture is a couch, where, according to sources familiar with the committee, long-time Chairman John Dingell is fond of sitting. From that couch, they say, the venerable Michigan Democrat, who has served for 53 years, has been known to point up to the photo and say, “That is the jurisdiction of this committee.”

Clinton promotes Obama, early voting at Aurora rally

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton stumped for Barack Obama in Aurora this afternoon, rallying a crowd of more than 1,000 people who traveled from around the Denver metro area to see her. Flanked by Colorado Governor Bill Ritter and U.S. Senator Ken Salazar, Clinton spoke at a park adjacent to the University of Colorado Hospital and a Colfax Avenue Checker Auto Parts store at 5 p.m.. She has made dozens of similar stops for her former rival in recent weeks.

UPDATED: Colorado congressional votes unchanged in bailout bill passage

Colorado Democrats Mark Udall and John Salazar and Republicans Marilyn Musgrave and Doug Lamborn stuck with their opposition to a massive $700 billion emergency plan to rescue the nation's troubled financial credit markets on Friday morning, but House leaders corralled enough votes to pass the bailout 263-171.

Colorado reps split in strange alliances on bailout failure

Colorado's congressional delegation split along unusual lines Monday, voting 4-3 against a proposed $700 billion emergency plan to bail out the nation's troubled financial institutions. The House of Representatives rejected the bill 228-205, sending markets into a panic and ending the day with the largest dollar loss in Wall Street history.
