Bill to to eliminate tiered electric rates on hold for now
Seventy percent of Colorado ratepayers would see their electric bills increase if a bill laid over in the House Transportation Committee becomes law, according to the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA). HB 1271 would collapse a tiered system, which currently allows low-energy users to pay less per kilowatt hour than high-energy users.
Mixed-bag Anthem settlement and Obamacare funds put insurers on notice
Although a large portion of the $20 million that health insurance giant Anthem Wellpoint agreed to pay Colorado policyholders will simply funnel back to Anthem, the settlement and the new $1 million that Colorado insurance industry regulators will receive this year through the new health reform legislation sends a strong message to insurers to deal fairly in the state, according to consumer advocates and commissioners at the state's regulatory Division of Insurance.
WellPoint’s 20 percent Colorado rate hike drew minimal review
As Washington again debated health reform last week, Coloradans enrolled in insurance giant WellPoint's Anthem individual group plan reeled from a 19.9 percent rate hike. Indianapolis-based WellPoint levied the double-digit increase here quietly in January, without a sound from Colorado lawmakers. A state insurance commissioner told the Independent he was unsurprised by the increase and "signed off" on it back in September.
