Occupiers draw the wrath of Family Research Council

Everybody has an opinion about Occupy Wall Street, Occupy Denver and the Occupy movement as a whole. And while well over half of all Americans approve of the multi-city protest, it certainly has it detractors as well.

Republican LGBT influence will not be tolerated, warns FRC

After being tipped off by a recent Washington Blade article about GOP LGBT groups’ attempts to influence the Republican Party platform at the 2012 Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., Family Research Council President Tony Perkins says those groups should expect a fight.

Family Research Council decries government spending while affiliates take in millions

The Family Research Council, a religious-right outfit some watchdog organizations have called an anti-gay hate group, has recently become quite vocal in its opposition to government spending and has called for drastic cuts to social programs. But a survey by The American Independent shows that FRC’s state-based affiliates, called family policy councils, have raked in nearly $6 million in state and federal funds over the last five years to work on their own social programming goals.

VIDEO: GOP presidential candidates fundraise for anti-gay groups

A number of Republican presidential candidates are raising money for family policy councils, state-based religious-right groups affiliated with the Family Research Council, a group that the Southern Poverty Law Center says is an anti-gay hate group.

The rise of anti-abortion-rights OB-GYNs

In April, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed a bill that makes it illegal for state colleges to fund medical residency programs that offer abortion training with state or federal money, including money paid by students as part of tuition or fees. But what began as a rare seed in a nationwide garden of abortion-defunding measures has blossomed into a national movement to reduce the number of medical professionals who are trained to provide abortions.

U.S. teen birthrate plummets, raising research questions

This year the birth rate for Colorado teenagers dropped significantly, mirroring a record drop for teen births across the country, which hit an all-time-low 3.9 percent, according to a report brought out by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics. That's a 6 percent drop-off from just last year. The figures are being celebrated as a great thing. How did we do it? Some are speculating it's the bad economy. Some say it's the roughly $1.5 billion taxpayers have poured into abstinence-only programs. Others say we're finally mastering contraception. The facts line up in support of the last of those three theories.

Focus on the Family vastly outpaced Mormon spending on Proposition 8

Colorado Springs-based Focus on the Family gave $727,250 in cash and services to the anti-gay marriage Proposition 8 campaign in California, according to records released by the California secretary of state, including a $100,000 check in late October, just days before the evangelical media empire announced it planned to lay off nearly 20 percent of its employees. While there has been public scrutiny of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for its attempts to influence the campaign to reverse a California Supreme Court ruling allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry, Focus on the Family and related donors pumped more than six times as much as the Mormon church did into the ProtectMarriage.com campaign, records show.
