DeGette, Polis introduce FRAC Act aimed at closing hydraulic fracturing ‘loophole’

Using some rather pointed language aimed at Bush administration energy policies in general and former Vice President Dick Cheney in particular, Colorado Rep.’s Diana DeGette, D-Denver, and Jared Polis, D-Boulder, Tuesday introduced the FRAC Act aimed at closing a natural-gas drilling loophole in the Safe Drinking Water Act.

Polis Victory Fund to raise money for Bennet, Markey and House...

Boulder Democrat U.S. Rep. Jared Polis, who cruised to election last fall after surviving a bruising three-way primary, has formed a joint fundraising committee to raise campaign cash for 30 of his Democratic colleagues, including fellow Colorado freshmen U.S. Rep. Betsy Markey and U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet, CQ Politics reports. The Jared Polis Victory Fund will also parcel out donations to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and four PACs run by House leadership, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

DeGette, Salazar split on proposed natural gas drilling regs

Four years after Vice President Dick Cheney spearheaded a massive energy bill that exempted natural gas drilling from federal clean water laws, Congress is having second thoughts about the environmental dangers posed by the burgeoning industry. With growing evidence that the drilling can damage water supplies, Democratic leaders in Congress are circulating legislation that would repeal the extraordinary exemption and for the first time require companies to disclose all chemicals used in the key drilling process, called hydraulic fracturing.

Iraq veteran ruse fooled local media and politicians

An elaborate story of military service and multiple Iraq deployments concocted by a Colorado man to curry favor on the 2008 political campaign stump unraveled after his arrest on a traffic warrant. Richard Strandlof, who went by the name Rick Duncan and purported to be the founder of Colorado Veterans Alliance, a group that "... empowers Veterans to use their credibility and experiences to speak truth to power ...", fooled international media as well as then-Democratic candidates Jared Polis and Hal Bidlack.

Colorado likely to play critical role in shaping clean-energy bill

Colorado’s New Energy Economy will serve as a model and its congressional delegation as a catalyst for a comprehensive energy bill currently being hashed out in two U.S. House committees, according one Denver-based environmental advocate closely tracking the legislation.

Post, Tribune endorse adding sexual orientation to federal hate-crime law

In the wake of Colorado's first successful prosecution of a hate-crime law against the killer of a transgender murder victim, both The Denver Post and The Greeley Tribune say it's time to pass national legislation that would add sexual orientation and gender identity to federal anti-bias laws.

Polis praises verdict in Zapata murder: ‘zero tolerance for hate crimes’

U.S. Rep. Jared Polis, who was elected to Congress in 2008 as an openly gay man, urged the passage of pending federal hate-crimes legislation in the wake of Wednesday's conviction on murder and bias-motivated, or hate-crimes charges of the man accused in the brutal death of Angie Zapata, a transgender Greeley woman.

Polis ‘thrilled’ by Iowa court decision legalizing same-sex marriage

U.S. Rep. Jared Polis, one of only a handful of openly gay members of Congress, cheered Friday's ruling by the Iowa Supreme Court striking down a ban on same-sex marriage. In a statement to The Colorado Independent, the Boulder Democrat said:
"I am thrilled by today's unanimous ruling on same-sex marriage by the Iowa Supreme Court. If it can happen in Iowa, it can happen anywhere. Hopefully, this is just the beginning of more progress to come."

Bennet on the record: Supports DREAM Act for immigration reform

U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet is voicing his approval of federal legislation that would give undocumented high school students in the United States a legal avenue to attend college. The proposal -- introduced in Congress two weeks ago as the DREAM Act -- would permit undocumented individuals who entered the United States before turning 15 years old to obtain conditional permanent residency in order to attend college or a trade school or to serve in the military.

Political donation strike hits $1 million mark

The campaign-finance reform group Change Congress announced today that members of Congress may be a cool million bucks lighter in their war chests next election cycle. The group's aim is a donor strike — getting 2008-election-cycle donors to pledge that they will withhold any further contributions to members of Congress who don't support a campaign-reform bill that rejects money from lobbyists, special interest and big donors. Those who have signed on reportedly contributed $1 million to federal candidates in the last go-around.
