Civil unions bill passes Senate: Steadman says it’s about the children

The gay and lesbian community are one step closer to being able to participate in state sanctioned unions after the Colorado Senate voted to pass on second reading SB 172. Democrats heralded the bill as a historic moment in the fight for civil rights and the protection of children.

Troy Ard, College Republicans Chair, throws support behind Colorado civil unions...

Openly gay Chairman of the Colorado Federation of College Republicans Troy Ard is lobbying colleagues and friends to support Senator Pat Steadman's same-sex civil unions bill making its way through the state legislature. Ard's support for the bill is personal, political and ideological. He wants to enjoy equal rights under the law as a gay American; he believes the Republican brand would benefit enormously by embracing gay rights; and he believes Americans should always be pushing their government to expand individual liberties.

Colorado school bullying bill passes out of committee; Bennet championing cause...

After hours of emotional testimony at the capitol Wednesday, the Colorado House Education Committee Wednesday voted 9 to 4 in favor of school-bullying prevention House Bill 1254 (pdf). The bill would revise anti-bullying guidelines and establish a board within the state Department of Education to revise rules of conduct and reporting and to raise money to pay for anti-bullying research and programs.

Colorado rights group celebrates Obama move to back off Defense of...

President Obama Wednesday directed Attorney General Eric Holder to stop battling legal attacks on the federal Defense of Marriage Act, saying he believes the Act unconstitutionally discriminates against gay couples. It's a move many Obama supporters have anticipated for years with diminishing hope as the attorney general's office fought back a series of challenges to the Act.

Civil unions supporters go old school, message lawmakers with construction paper...

Colorado lawmakers, beset like people everywhere today by ephemeral digital messaging, received a rare treat at the capitol yesterday in the form of construction paper "links of love" Valentine's Day messages. The curly colored notes came from constituents asking lawmakers to support same-sex civil unions legislation introduced Monday by Sen. Pat Steadman, D-Denver. Civil unions advocates delivered the hand-written colored paper messages, more than a thousand of them. Video evidence below.

In advance of Steadman bill, surveys show strong support in Colorado...

As state Senator Pat Steadman gets set to introduce his civil unions legislation in Denver next week, new public opinion poll results bolster the case for the bill. The results of a Public Policy Polling survey (pdf) conducted this past weekend match almost exactly results of a survey conducted last January by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner and American Viewpoint. More than 70 percent of Coloradans support legally recognized domestic partnerships, including those between same-sex couples.

Smart Steadman strategy will lean on broad public support to pass...

Colorado Senator Pat Steadman isn't depending entirely on goodwill and a sense of fairness among his colleagues at the capitol to pass the same-sex civil unions bill he will introduce next week. He is also depending on the very smart legislative strategy he has built around public support for the idea in the state.

Hemmed in by state anti-gay marriage law, Steadman to introduce civil...

Denver Democratic state Senator Pat Steadman is sponsoring a bill that would make same-sex civil unions legal in Colorado. The move is being cheered as long overdue by gay rights supporters, who have been stymied in efforts to win equality by a constitutional amendment that outlaws gay marriage in the state. In weighing whether or not to introduce the legislation this summer, Steadman told the Colorado Independent that "promoting a lesser status for gay people is not ideal” but that, in the short term, "people could really benefit from civil unions.”
