With veto override, Vermont legalizes same-sex marriage

Vermont became the first state to establish same-sex marriage rights through a vote by a state legislature Tuesday morning -- and the second state in a week to legalize gay marriage after the Iowa Supreme Court threw out a state law restricting marriage to a man and a woman in a ruling Friday. The vote in the Vermont House of Representatives was a nail-biter: Lawmakers tossed Gov. Jim Douglas' veto of legislation allowing gay marriage by a single vote, 100-49, with a two-thirds majority required to quash the veto. Earlier Tuesday morning, the Vermont Senate overrode the veto 23-5.

Silver: Colorado could be willing to reverse gay marriage ban in...

Colorado voters will be ready to repeal the state's constitutional ban on gay marriage next year, according to an analysis by voting statistics geek Nate Silver of FiveThirtyEight.com. Following the Iowa Supreme Court's establishment of same-sex marriage on Friday, Silver examined the trends in the 30 states that have voted on gay marriage bans and found that "while you might (not) know it from Proposition 8's victory last year, voter initiatives to ban gay marriage are becoming harder and harder to pass every year."

Polis ‘thrilled’ by Iowa court decision legalizing same-sex marriage

U.S. Rep. Jared Polis, one of only a handful of openly gay members of Congress, cheered Friday's ruling by the Iowa Supreme Court striking down a ban on same-sex marriage. In a statement to The Colorado Independent, the Boulder Democrat said:
"I am thrilled by today's unanimous ruling on same-sex marriage by the Iowa Supreme Court. If it can happen in Iowa, it can happen anywhere. Hopefully, this is just the beginning of more progress to come."

Iowa court throws out same-sex marriage ban, lets gay couples wed

In a unanimous ruling issued Friday morning, the Iowa Supreme Court struck down a state law restricting marriage to opposite-sex couples, saying the law violates the state constitution's equal protection clause. The court ordered the state to begin "allowing gay and lesbian people full access to the institution of civil marriage," becoming the fourth state to legalize same-sex marriage.

Rallies to protest Prop 8, marriage bans set for Saturday across...

A nationwide day of protest against California's Proposition 8 and other measures in last week's election that banned same-sex marriage includes rallies planned in Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins, Colorado Springs, Durango and Aspen. Organized through the Join the Impact! Web site, simultaneous protests aim to call attention to the issue as a civil rights issue at 11:30 a.m. MST Saturday as hundreds of gatherings take place across the country.

Polis, Starin differ dramatically on gay rights issues in Colorado’s 2nd...

Republican 2nd Congressional District candidate Scott Starin balks at the notion of amending the U.S. Constitution, an action he says should not be taken lightly. But when it comes to same-sex marriage, he would be willing to make an exception. “At the federal level, I always am hesitant to amend the Constitution; there’s a reason it’s only been amended a few times in our 230-year-plus history,” said Starin, who’s running against openly gay Democrat Jared Polis in the left-leaning district that includes Boulder.

Gay marriage and McDonald’s: Dobson wins one, loses one

The news, that same-gender couples have the right to marry in Connecticut, has gays and lesbians rejoicing — and James Dobson of Focus on the Family fuming http://www.citizenlink.org/content/A000008410.cfm. But hey, at least his Colorado Springs-based ministry and media empire has something to celebrate: McDonald’s has removed the “Gay Agenda” from its menu, and now Dobson can supersize his Big Mac special value meal with pride.

More of the same on same-sex marriage from VPs

In Thursday night’s debate between vice presidential candidates Gov. Sarah Palin and Sen. Joe Biden, gay rights surfaced briefly enough for both VP nominees to agree that they did not support same-sex marriage. The issue, which has been used to motivate the conservative base in past elections, has flown under the radar in this year’s presidential campaign.
