Ritter spokesman on accusation of ‘wet kiss’ for Tri-State power: ‘Let’s...

The push by environmental groups for Colorado Public Utilities Commission (PUC) oversight of rural electric co-ops (REAs) and the utilities that supply them with power is already shaping up as a key campaign issue in the 2010 governor’s race.

Political payback? Posting of McInnis 527 comment could be conservative GOP...

Former six-term Republican congressman Scott McInnis, who’s all but announced he intends to run for the governor’s office in 2010, may be getting some payback for taking on the conservative base of the state party just before the 2008 election.

Where does the Colorado GOP go from here? Ask Dick and...

Colorado Independent readers, your citizen journalism moment has arrived. Rocky Mountain PBS talk show host Aaron Harber is requesting questions for his two-part series on the future of the Colorado Republican Party. But hurry, your deadline is 10 a.m. Monday.

McInnis read ‘tribute’ to Bartleson into Congressional Record in 2003

Child sex assault suspect Jeffrey Claude Bartleson, the former manager of Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign office in Pueblo, was praised in the Congressional Record in 2003 by former Rep. Scott McInnis, who represented Pueblo before leaving the House of Representatives in 2004. On a page filled with tributes to constituents -- a common practice for any member of Congress -- McInnis salutes Bartleson's work as a foster parent and his role founding the Interfaith Hospitality Network, "one of Pueblo's newest self-help organizations."

GOP contenders line up, ‘wait and see’ whether to challenge Bennet...

With Monday's withdrawal from the Senate race by Attorney General John Suthers, state Republicans lack a clear front-runner to take on newly appointed Democrat Michael Bennet in 2010. Other top GOP prospects have hesitated to enter the race, weighing both their own fortunes and the emerging profile of Bennet, the former Denver Public Schools chief, who lacks a voting record and has never before run for office. It's a markedly different tone than state Republicans sounded last month when contenders jostled for the chance to take on an appointed senator.

Poll: Bennet would beat Tancredo, lose to Owens, but is largely...

Colorado's junior senator, Michael Bennet, is viewed more favorably than not among voters who know him but is still a mystery to nearly half of those contacted by Public Policy Polling (PPP) in a survey released Tuesday. The Democrat beat three potential GOP opponents in hypothetical 2010 match-ups — he bested former U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo 48-39, and scored six-point leads over state Attorney General John Suthers and former U.S. Rep. Scott McInnis, though both said Monday they weren't interested in the race — and polled three points behind former Gov. Bill Owens, who hasn't indicated any interest in running for the Senate.

Bill Thiebaut joins the jockeying for Colorado U.S. attorney

Pueblo District Attorney Bill Thiebaut, a former longtime Colorado legislator, is the latest to say in effect, “Pick Me!” to be Colorado’s next U.S. attorney. On Thursday the Pueblo Chieftain reported that Thiebaut, a former majority leader in the state Senate, is interested in being nominated to replace Republican Troy Eid, who announced this week he plans to resign on Jan. 19 and run for attorney general in 2010.

Republicans salivate at chance to take on Salazar’s replacement in Senate

Republicans are lining up for the chance to mount a challenge in 2010 to whichever Democrat wins appointment to a Senate vacancy created by Sen. Ken Salazar's upcoming resignation to be secretary of the Interior. Two prominent statewide officeholders -- Attorney General John Suthers and U.S. Attorney Tom Eid -- came close to throwing their hats in the ring just hours after President-elect Barack Obama announced Salazar would, indeed, be a Cabinet nominee, The Denver Post is reporting. Add their names to a roster of the usual suspects, and the state GOP could have a rousing primary on its hands for a race thought only recently to be a steep, uphill climb.

Is oil and gas overrated?

Colorado’s recent energy boom has impacted the environment without having economic benefits as great as those generated by other industries, according to a new study. The report produced by the nonprofit research group Headwaters Economics, concludes that Colorado needs to lobby the federal government harder in order to control the pace of energy development on public lands, use state authority to protect the landscape of impacted communities and change the mineral tax structure to capture more value.

Will anyone have the guts to take on Wadhams?

The blogs are having a field day this week, speculating as to which lucky Joe will emerge the winning plumber who will flush out the old and usher in a new winning majority for Colorado’s down-and-out GOP. And yes, current Republican Party Chairman Dick Wadhams is still in the mix.
