Politico calls Groff ‘sleeper’ candidate to take over Salazar’s Senate seat

If Bill Ritter is making a list, he'd better be checking it twice, because the cast of candidates to fill Colorado's U.S. Senate seat keeps shifting. On Tuesday, Politico pegged state Senate President Peter Groff as the "intriguing sleeper candidate getting buzz" to win the governor's nod to finish the term of Sen. Ken Salazar, who is leaving the Senate to be interior secretary.

First candidate emerges to replace term-limited Carroll in HD-7

The race is on. Denver native Mark Mehringer told The Colorado Independent today that he will officially throw his hat in the ring next month to succeed longtime, but term-limited, state Rep. Terrance Carroll (D-Denver) in House District 7. Carroll will become speaker of the Colorado House next month when the 2009 legislative session convenes Jan. 7.

School safety proposal could run up against tight state budget

With an eye toward the Columbine and Virginia Tech shootings, a Grand Junction Republican plans to introduce legislation that would make Colorado the first state in the nation to require that every school — from preschools through universities — develop a plan and conduct training to prepare for disasters. "If you haven't thought about it, we want you to think about it," state Rep. Steve King told 9News, but the incoming speaker of the House, state Rep. Terrance Carroll, cautioned that a statewide lockdown procedure could be too expensive during a tight budget year.

DLC lauds Speaker-elect Carroll, points to historic legislative leadership

Newly anointed speaker of the Colorado House Terrance Carroll gets the star treatment from the rabidly centrist Democratic Leadership Council, which this week named the Denver Democrat its New Dem of the Week. With the re-election of state Sen. Peter Groff to head the upper chamber, Carroll's ascension in the House makes Colorado the first state in the nation to have both houses of a legislature led by African-Americans, the DLC profile observes.

Carroll named speaker as Colorado legislative leadership takes shape

State Rep. Terrance Carroll will be the state's first African-American speaker of the House after winning a run-off against fellow Denver state Rep. Anne McGihon on Thursday morning at the state Capitol. State Rep. Kathleen Curry of Gunnison also bid for the vacancy, which was created by Speaker Andrew Romanoff's retirement and the unexpected Election Day defeat of heir apparent Bernie Buescher of Grand Junction.

Colorado’s legislative leadership picks could include some surprises

And you thought the election was over? Colorado lawmakers are meeting today to pick new leaders charged with keeping the Capitol running smoothly, and, with Democrat Bernie Buescher unexpectedly out of the picture, a couple of surprises are in store for the donkeys. Over on the Republican side, a reported coup may be in the works.
