Oh, the tangled webs we weave…

I just love it when Republicans have to overcome attacks they used to nail Democrats with. Consider McCain’s VP pick Sarah Palin, who supported the “Bridge to Nowhere” before she opposed it. And who ran up a $20 million debt as mayor of a town smaller than Lamar. And believe it or not, the McCain camp actually plans to run an ad claiming she’s somehow more qualified for the job of President than Barack Obama. Huh?! To strain a metaphor, this pig is drowning in lipstick.

Court docs: Suicide mission planned in plot to kill Obama at...

Denver's 9NEWS reports the FBI asked for more serious charges to be filed against at least one of the suspects arrested last week in a suspected plot to kill Barack Obama during the Democratic National Convention. Federal court documents obtained by reporter Jace Larson describe a plot to assassinate Obama in a suicide mission using a gun hidden inside a camera.

The culture war option for the Palin convention

John McCain's convention gambit is now a culture war strategy. It depends for its execution on conflict with journalists, and with bloggers (the "angry left," Bush called them last night) along with confusion between and among the press, the blogosphere, and the Democratic party. It revives cultural memory: the resentment narrative after Chicago '68 but with the angry left more distributed. It dispenses with issues and seeks a trial of personalities. It bets big time on backlash.

Polls show post-DNC bounce fueling Obama lead

A Gallup daily tracking poll released Tuesday shows Democrat Barack Obama topping 50 percent support for the first time, adding to a lead that has been growing since his speech Thursday accepting the nomination at Denver's Invesco Field. Other polls tracking the presidential race over the weekend tally an Obama lead over John McCain by as many as 9 points, up from a virtual dead heat as the Democratic National Convention began last week.

RNC mixed messaging

The ideals of "country first," and "service" won lavish praise at the Republican National Convention last night. The realities of the Republican party and President George W. Bush got rather less respect.

Joe Lieberman’s long journey to the RNC

It’s been a long road to Minnesota for Joe Lieberman. Eight years ago he was the number two on Al Gore’s ticket against President George Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. At the time, he stood before the Democratic National Convention and made a rousing acceptance speech that promoted the progressive agenda: better health care, campaign finance reform, a stronger public education system. He invoked the memory of Jack Kennedy while energizing Democrats to stand up and support their party, his party.

Crank turns T-shirt merchant with anti-Obama design

Three weeks after losing a rematch in the 5th Congressional District primary, Republican Jeff Crank is in St. Paul vending a T-shirt that warns against electing Democrats Barack Obama and Joe Biden. Featuring the familiar Obama logo with an added mushroom cloud, the "Obama bin Biden" shirts have generated plenty of interest at the Republican National Convention, Crank tells Politicker CO's Jeremy Pelzer.

Post-Gustav is no time to act like a Republican

On Monday, the McCain campaign website ran a quote from the candidate himself smack-dab on the homepage: "I pledge that tomorrow night and if necessary throughout our convention, we will act as Americans and not as Republicans because America needs us now." Darn right — you better not act like Republicans if you want to help America.

Obama sends Gustav appeals via text, e-mail

As Hurricane Gustav lashed the Louisiana coast, the Obama campaign sent text messages and e-mails to its vast fundraising and organizing lists urging donations to the Red Cross to help Gulf Coast residents facing Hurricane Gustav.

Congratulations Colorado

The doubters said we couldn’t do it. That our fair city, our “cowtown,” would be overrun. In 1908 restaurants ran out of food on the first day, having no idea what hosting the Democratic National Convention required. But 100 years later I’d say Denver more than made up for our past follies by hosting a truly magnificent convention.
