Veto pressure mounts as Hickenlooper reviews open-records elections bill
In the weeks since the Colorado legislative session ended, calls for Gov. John Hickenlooper to veto House Bill 1036 have come from the political left, right and center, from government watchdog organizations, citizen rights and tax reform activists and from representatives of the sovereign Ute Mountain Ute tribe in southwest Colorado. Whatever happens by next Friday, when the deadline to sign the bill arrives, wrangling over its contents and legitimacy will continue indefinitely.
Judge smacks Gessler in issue committee case
Denver District Court Judge Bruce Jones on Tuesday smacked down Secretary of State Scott Gessler in a topsy-turvy campaign finance trial that saw two government watchdog groups defending the Colorado Constitution against the man sworn as state head of elections to uphold it.
Inactive voters playing major role in Pueblo County election
Pueblo County Clerk Gilbert "Bo" Ortiz defended his right to send ballots to "inactive voters" this year over the objections of Secretary of State Scott Gessler. Ortiz told the Colorado Independent he believes his main objective as clerk is to facilitate participation in elections and, on that score, he has succeeded. As of Monday night, 16 percent of the county's roughly 17,000 inactive voters had cast ballots. That's 2,700 votes, nearly 9 percent of all votes cast in the county, which is a lot of votes.
